1 A GDI/Host based printer is a printer that has little memory and processing power and that relies on the operating system to do most of the work necessary to print a page

2 A "Smart" printer is a printer that has memory and enough processing capacity to do the bulk of the work needed to print a page. This keeps your computer more responsive because the operating system does not have to do as much work.
